Nutrition Now PB8 Contains 8 Different Probiotics

What Probiotic Strains are in Nutrition Now PB8?

Although the product label says, "Pro-Biotic Acidophilus for Life", this product contains more than just L. acidophilus. The exact strains used in PB8 are unknown. Only the different species are listed and they total 14 billion CFU at the time of manufacture. The 8 different species are:

  1. Lactobacillus acidophilus
  2. Bifidobacterium lactis
  3. Lactobacillus plantarum
  4. Lactobacillus salivarius
  5. Bifidobacterium bifidum
  6. Bifidobacterium longum
  7. Lactobacillus rhamnosus
  8. Lactobacillus casei

What are the Other Ingredients in Nutrition Now PB8?

Please always verify the ingredients before taking any product. The other ingredients at the time of this writing are microcrystalline cellulose, inulin, magnesium stearate and a cellulose capsule for the vegetarian PB8 and microcrstalline cellulose, inulin, magnesium stearate, silica and a gelatin capsule for the regular probiotic supplement.

What is the Recommended Dosage of This Probiotic Supplement?

The dosage recommended on the bottle is two capsules per day for digestion support.

What are the Pros of Nutrition Now PB8?

There are several advantages of this probiotic supplement:

  • It is a  multi-species product.
  • It is marketed for digestion support. Since it contains 8 different species of probiotics which have different and overlapping functions in the body, it might help with digestion depending on a person's needs.
  • It contains NO gluten (wheat), eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts or soy.
  • It contains no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners nor preservatives.
  • Most of the other ingredients (except the inulin) are basically inert.
  • There is a vegetarian option.
  • There is an option with the regular probiotic supplement to have inulin, a carbohydrate prebiotic, to help support the growth of the probiotics in the intestines.

What are the Cons of Nutrition Now PB8?

There are several disadvantages of this probiotic supplement, too:

  • Only the species are given; you don't know which strains are in the product since the information is proprietary.
  • Only the total CFU is given; you don't know how much of each species is present.
  • The total CFU is at the time of manufacture, not at expiration, so you don't know if you are really getting the amount listed on the label.
  • The regular version of this probiotic supplement is made with a gelatin capsule (Beef allergy alert!)
  • The regular version also contains inulin, a carbohydrate prebiotic to support the growth of the microbes, which may pose problems for some people even though it is at an amount less than 1 gram per 2 capsules.
  • As with most probiotic supplements, this one requires refrigeration after it is delivered.
  • No studies with this supplement as a whole supplement have been performed to my knowledge. Note that this is not unusual, however. Very few multi-species probiotic supplements are used in studies. Instead, species and strain that are show to be effective and non-competing are mixed together in most multi-species supplements such as this one.
  • Compared to other multi-species probiotic supplements, this one contains a lower number of total CFU of 7 billion per capsule.

Is PB8 the Right Probiotic Supplement for YOU?

I can help you decide if this probiotic supplement fits your needs. What I will say from personal experience with it that it was one of the first probiotic supplements I took. I like that they offered a gluten-free, dairy-free supplement that said so right on the label when I was trying to navigate the gluten-free world many years ago. Unlike today's circumstances, before the words "gluten-free" were nearly common knowledge and had a meaning, it was very hard to find products I could trust. I trusted this product.

In addition to taking a supplement, I encourage you to explore the world of naturally-fermented whole foods and drinks and probiotic-fortified foods and drinks.

Many thanks to Nancy for suggesting a review of this gluten-free dairy-free probiotic supplement!
