Fem-Dophilus is a probiotic supplement trademarked by Jarrow Formulas. It is marketed as an "oral probiotic for natural vaginal health". It has been shown in clinical trials to help with bv (bacterial vaginosis), vaginal yeast infections and UTI (urinary tract infections).
This probiotic supplement contains two patented lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 which were shown in clinical trials to colonize the human vagina and significantly reduce the persistence of vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections. The two strains of bacteria also reduced bv when used by themselves or in addition to antibiotics.
Both probiotic supplements contain the correct strains of lactic acid bacteria to benefit vaginal and urinary conditions since the two strains in them, L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. reuteri RC-14, are patented strains. Chr. Hansen patented the strains in a combination product used in clinical trials called "Urex". Therefore, Chr. Hansen supplies the strains used in both probiotic supplements and probably manufactures both.
You will see from the ingredients that the two products are basically identical, but quality reassurance to the consumer (you and me) from one is better than from the other.
Jarrow Formulas suggests that one capsule be taken orally each day for maintenance of healthy urogenital conditions. The dosage can be increased to two capsules per day as needed or as directed by your qualified health practitioner.
Jarrow states that this probiotic supplement is "manufactured under pharmaceutical GMP (good manufacturing practices) insuring potency and consistency. The probiotic strains in fem-dophilus®are in a proprietary polysaccharide matrix, which protects the bacteria from stomach acid and enhances probiotic bacteria survival to the lower intestine.*
Knowing that the product is manufactured under pharmaceutical GMP is reassuring to me, as this means that Jarrow Formulas is following standardized methods of quality control. This doesn't mean that RepHResh Pro-B isn't, but I like to see the company say it. And I like to know as much about a product as I can.
The ingredients are:
Jarrow Formulas' product contains the same ingredients as RepHresh Pro-B,
but they also let us know that it does NOT contain wheat, gluten,
soybeans, egg, fish/shellfish, or peanuts/tree nuts. If reading that information on a label is important to you, then this may be the product you want.
Here is my review of RepHresh Pro-B.
